Till 'Society' Do Us Part

So I watched 'Dhadak' this weekend. Booking the tickets itself was an act of valor as the movie had received widely negative reviews. But contrary to the popular opinion, I found the rom com worth watching and worth my time. The main plus point of the movie is its genre. With the Bollywood wildly romanticizing the genres of biopics and nationalism, I must say, the movie brings with itself a breath of fresh air.

The story revolves around  two young passionate lovers who find themselves trapped in the hierarchy of the society and ultimately fall victim to it.

What shook me to the very core was the ending of the movie. There was a stunned silence in the  theater, as everyone's mind was blown away with the harsh reality of 'Honor killing'.

After watching the movie, a person feels nothing but sorry for the society and for the people living in it .

Over the years, we have fabricated for ourselves such a large number of traditions, values and moral principles in the name of religion, caste, creed, ethnicity, that even if willing to, we are unable to get out of this mess. It is a 'Frankenstein's monster' that will ultimately lead us to our demise .

What started as a way of unifying people in the 'Stone age' to increase the efficiency and productivity of the whole 'tribe' has turned into 'constraint on personal freedom' which is nothing but a breeding ground for mutiny in this 'Age of Information'. And History confirms the fact that restrictions have always lead to rebellion.

The solution? Apparently, there isn't any. We can wait for an apocalypse to occur that will lead to resettlement of the entire society, but again, with no guarantee of personal freedom. 'Log kya kahenge' will always be a decisive factor in daring to opt for the road not taken.

The only method of resenting the society is the approach of 'Ekla Chalo Re'. With confidence in your decisions and faith in your ability, one can take over the society single handedly. As Mahatma Gandhi quoted - "First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win."

In the end, change comes to the people, but not before facing its fair share of resistance. But the question is, do you have what it takes to start this transition? Can you afford to lose your loved ones for the sake of this change? And, can you fight for what you think is right, Till 'Society' Do You Part?

Do let me know what you think about this in the comments section below.
