Nepotism Rocks !

"The Indian elite is a system where there is a 100 percent reservation for its own genetic material."
-Manu Joseph, New York times.
Bollywood is alleged to be the flag bearer of Nepotism. What is Nepotism? The word usually surfaces when any actor from a lineage of 'Stars' is given a break in Bollywood. According to Oxford it is the practice among those with power or influence of favoring relatives or friends, especially by giving them jobs.

In my opinion Bollywood is a scapegoat. Why to blame Bollywood?
India has been a flag bearer of Nepotism for centuries. The practice started when Kings used to declare their son as heir to the throne of their kingdom. The practice is still prevalent in England where currently Prince Charles is next in line to the British throne .
Modern India is a product of Nepotism. It prevails in every field - from the Gandhi clan in politics to the Tatas, Birlas and Ambanis in the field of business.
In his book 'India: A Portrait', the British writer Patrick French coined the term - 'Hereditary M.P.’s'  for the parliamentarians who belong to the families with a political backgrounds. He found out that cent percent of the elected members in the lower house of the Indian Parliament qualify for this term.
But what is wrong in Nepotism? I think - Nothing.
Natalia Vodianova, a Russian model and philanthropist, famous for her rags to riches life story, rightly quoted, 'I think protecting your family and giving to them is so important. It's the most important achievement.'
In fact, in my opinion Nepotism is better than Reservation.
Dr. B.R. Ambedkar had agreed to end Reservation a decade after the adoption of Constitution thinking that 10 years were sufficient for the minorities to build a platform for themselves and for their future generations to rely upon. What he meant in my opinion was that after getting equal opportunity, the sole criteria for selection in any field would be talent.
But after nearly 70 years of the adoption, Reservation prevails and the situation existing today is 'Reserved vs Deserving candidates'.
On the other hand Nepotism just provides an early opportunity for the 'Star kids', and is not a guarantee for their success.

We have many examples ranging from Rajiv kapoor (son of the legendary Raj Kapoor) to Rohan Gavaskar (son of Sunil Gavaskar) who failed miserably even after a grand launch and an easy entry.
Imagine a scenario where there is Reservation in Bollywood and each producer is bound to cast a certain fraction of 'Underprivileged artists'?
Ranbir Kapoor in an interview quoted "Of course it(Nepotism) exists. I believe my Great Grandfather worked really hard to give his children an opportunity in their professional life. I would like to work hard for my children so that they get the right opportunity, platform, the right first film. After that, it’s about your talent."
In my opinion he is right. The basic mindset of an Indian parent whether a Rickshaw puller or a Business tycoon is to facilitate the life and career of their children in every possible way and to try not to let them face the hardships that they faced in life.

Let me give a very simple example. A Businessman who has established his business by sheer hard work will hand over his business to his son and not an employee who may be more efficient in handling it compared to his son. It's human nature!
At last, as the common saying goes- 'Survival of the fittest'. So, what's wrong if one inherits this fitness from his forefathers to survive in this world !!
